It´s hot here. Two days ago, I was wearing several layers of clothing and sleeping with three blankets. Today, I am sweating. The weather here is unpredictable! Everyone keeps telling me about the summer heat here. Some say it´s almost unbearable. Thankfully, I will be in the United States for Christmas during the peak of their sweltering summer.
I didn´t believe them when they warned me about the roaches. I hadn´t seen any the entire time I´d been here until last night when I saw...4 in my bathroom. Yes...one more sign that I´m really living in South America.
I´m a local celeb now...sort of. Doni, the pastor of the church, has a local TV show that airs on Saturday mornings. It airs in parts of Argentina as well as here in Paraguay. They talk about various issues facing their culture. I was invited this morning along with eight other young people to talk about the problems today´s youth encounter. They asked me about the similarities and differences of the youth in the United States. I think we deal with many of the same issues as these young people here in South America. The world sends the message to ¨live for the moment,¨but many people don´t understand how damaging this mantra can be. Giving in to what feels good today may bring terrible consequences for tomorrow. I am very impressed by the eight young people that were on the show today. They are taking a stand and choosing to abstain from the damaging activities of their culture. They testified on television in front of their peers, their families, and their coworkers that they have found a life worth living. Their actions are speaking volumes. They know truth. I am encouraged and inspired by such brave spirits. I know they will be rewarded for pursuing things of righteousness.
Today, I ate rice with squid, octupus, snails, and clams. It was a little unsettling, especially since we are hours from the coast. We´ll see how I feel later.
Monday is a holiday here. No school! Hopefully, I´ll be able to put some more pictures up.
Bendiciones (Blessings),
Em

fowpahDear Emily
I was so thrilled to hear all about what you have been doing. I understand that at times it is difficult, living in a strange and underdeveloped country. Norm and I are praying for you and know that you will benefit from this wonderful experience as well as contributing enormously to all the people that you are in contact with and have come to help. Your Faith and attitude will certainly sustain you. Norm and I had a great trip to Alacka. I will send you an e-mail about it.
I love you and are proud of what you are doing
Susu
